Valerian and the City of Thousand Planets

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a futuristic scientific fiction about Valerian and Laureline who are charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories in the universe in the 28th century. The Minister of Defense assigned them an operation to embark on a mission to the city of Alpha, a city of a thousand planets, metropolis that is ever expanding where species from all over the universe have converged over time to share their knowledge, intelligence and their culture with each other.

Valerian and Laureline were sent to Alpha to fix a problem; a dark force is threatening the peaceful existence of Alpha and they must find out and identify the dark force and safeguard Alpha and the future of the universe.

Valerian has magnificent production design and special effects but the plot and storytelling are wanting. Like The Fifth Element which is directed by the same director, Valerian is not to be watch for its storytelling but should be watch for its style and production design. It may not have great lines but with humor injected to the lines, it is funny and it is not a bore to watch.

It does not have the finesse of other great futuristic scientific fiction movies but it is still a joy to watch; good special effects but the plot is uninteresting. It is visually stunning an eye candy, more on style not on content.

Dane Dehaan as Valerian did a terrible job, he is very still and emotionless; he is not suitable for the character. Cara DeLavingne is much better but they do not have chemistry; Rihanna should keep her day job. The movie would have been a notch better if they have chosen the right actors.

It stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian, Cara Delavingne as Laureline, Rihanna as Bubble, Clive Owen as Commander Filitt and Ethan Hawke as Jolly the Pimp. Directed and written by Luc Besson from Europa and STX Films.
